The Mountain Mine seam was only 30 inches (80cm) thick at best, so working conditions were very hard. At the top of the shaft was a weighing and grading area with two weighmen – one employed by the company, and one paid by the workers to check the weight of coal mined.
A raised tramway carried coal from the pit head to be loaded into railway trucks or used to produce coke.
