Fed by a natural spring, the pond was created by the Groundwork Trust to improve the site for local wildlife.
Although this provides an attractive feature now, flooding of the mine by groundwater was a problem during its working life and powerful pumps had to be used continuously to prevent this.
It is recorded that 830 gallons per minute had to be pumped out in 1877.
